What is Aircraft Data Recording
Aircraft data recording is a general term given to any application where aircraft data is acquired and recorded for future analysis. This can include recording mission data for post-flight analysis for training purposes or recording data about the aircrafts structural performance for load profile development and analysis. Common aircraft data recording applications include Flight Data monitoring (FDM), Mission Recording, Health and Usage Monitoring Systems (HUMS), Operational Data Monitoring (ODM) and Flight Operation Quality Assurance (FOAQ).
Mission Recording
The purpose of a mission recorder is typically to acquire audio, video and bus data during flight and record it on an accessible device for post mission (flight) playback. Often a mission recorder is part of a larger “Mission Planning system” which is the airborne data acquisition/recording unit and the ground PC with mission planning and mission debrief software installed.
FDAU
There is a trend towards using the flight recorder system as an active component in aircraft maintenance, expanding its role to include Flight Operations Quality Assurance (FOQA), Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) and other programs. Many additional parameters can be recorded by selecting the appropriate FDAU with a Quick Access Recorder (QAR) capability – without compromising the certification of the FDR. Along with the range of interfaces and multiple output protocols, Continuous Built-In Test (CBIT), GPS and onboard processing modules are available.
Structural Integrity Program
ACRA CONTROL’s products are used by many operators for structural integrity programs such as Operational Loads Monitoring (OLM). These programs seek to extend the active life of aircraft to predict and identify structural problems through
- Cost Effective Individual Aircraft Tracking
- Accurate Mission Profiling
- Validation of Baseline Spectra and Stress/load Ratios
The compact size of ACRA CONTROL’s products makes them ideal for saving space in retrofit applications while the modular design simplifies varied fleet implementation.
Condition Based Monitoring (CBM)
ACRA CONTROL has experience in providing CBM programs, such as aircraft engine monitoring, mechanical health and vibration monitoring, on a number of airframes. Aside from safety improvements, the maintenance benefits of such programs which lead to significant cost savings over time include:
- Eliminating unnecessary inspections
- Preventative maintenance
- Increased aircraft availability
- Improved equipment life
In the past many of the technologies offered have been bespoke designs that are costly to buy and own with little on-going development. ACRA CONTROL’s products are free of these problems since they are adaptable, flexible and have low lifecycle costs thanks to their COTS modular design.
